What a day… It was my longest daily distance so far of 28 miles. One day I’ll break 30. The climbs were moderate with 2 500 foot climbs followed by a 1000 footer at the end.
I got up at 4 am as usual. I tried to be quiet as I had others in camp but it’s really not possible. I ate Captain Crunch cereal, then started stuffing plastic bags inside of plastic. One of the other campers shouted out “Hey Blackhawk!! What the fuck??” I quickly shoved all my stuff in my bag in any order, unstaked the tent and dragged it all down the road a piece so I could repack it without disturbing the others. By 6, I was on the trail again.
I walked fairly slow to prevent foot damage, but by about 20 miles, my dogs were barking… The last 15 miles had no water stops, so I carried 5 liters of water in that section. Since the day was cold and shady, I could have gotten by with 3 liters. It turns out that I overshot my destination at the end. It was after 8 pm and getting quite dark. I had to walk back a half mile only to find out there were on campsites where I thought they would be. I had to bushwhack off the trail in the dark to find a clear spot under some trees that would be sufficient. I picked a spot, but it was very steeply angled and made for a lousy sleep. I was constantly sliding to one side and to the bottom of the tent all night. But, there were no better sites nearby, and I was exhausted.
