The packages from UPS with my boot inserts and rain jacket didn’t arrive until 3:30 pm. By the time I could get a ride back to the trail, it would be getting dark and I would have to sleep on the trail at the drop off point. I decided to do one more night in the hotel and get a ride early the next morning. A local advertises that she will take hikers to the trail for $30. A little steep but I decided it would be the easiest to arrange, and I know I can’t get a ride hitching, so I called her and arranged for her to pick me up at 8am to take me to the trail.
I was walking to the restaurant when I saw a very large animal in a close by home. It was an elk cow. She saw me but did’t seem concerned. I guess they don’t realize that it is bow hunting season right now. I’m not sure the policy about hunting cows. I know in Wisconsin, the deer always seemed to know when it was hunting season and were well hidden at that time.
So, 4 nights in Packwood should be a good rest break and I should be strong on the trail. We’ll see.
