Last night was a good one. I slept well. It was cold but I was warm in my tent and sleeping bag. I woke at about 5 am and was on the trail by 6:15, which is quite quick for me. My feet were in fine shape in the morning, but as usual degraded in the afternoon into the familiar agony. I’m not complaining. This is an improvement. It kinda goes like this: When I wake, my feet feel swollen and sensitive from the ball of my foot through my toes. When I first start walking, I feel like I’m walking on balloons and is uncomfortable. Very soon afterwords, it feels like the swelling subsides and I only have the usual numbness and a slight burning. As long as I don’t walk too fast, all is well until about noon, where my feet begin to hurt and hinder my stride for the rest of the day. My right knee usually hurts in the first hour, causing a limp, then gets better and is fine unless I have a lot of steep descents, in which case, it gets very sore and slows me down considerably.
Today saw almost 5k feet of elevation gain, which is like Washington mountains. I had lots of energy as it is early in the section. I may feel the effects tomorrow.
I often recline on rocks and logs when taking a break. The backpack serves as a respectable backrest.
